Performance zwischen Linux und Windows
Hallo zusammen,
erstmal ein nettes Hallo meinerseits in die Runde. Ich bin 39 Jahre und seit ca. 1 Jahr dabei im Thema Flugsimulation. Nun auch gleich zu meiner ersten Frage:
Ich habe X-Plane auf Ubuntu 8.04 installiert und musste leider einen markanten Unterschied bei der Framerate feststellen. Unter Windows läuft die ganze Sache wesentlich flüssiger als unter Ubuntu. Können das andere Kollegen auch bestätigen ? Läuft der Simulator eventuell auf einer anderen Distribution oder einem anderen Derivat flüssiger ?

Das hängt prinzipiell mit der verwendeten Grafikkarte zusammen. Der Nvidia-Treiber für Linux etwa ist genauso schnell wie sein Windows-Pendant, der ATI-Treiber soll aber noch des öfteren Probleme bereiten.
Was hast du denn für eine Grafikkarte? Wahrscheinlich ist der Treiber schuld -- und wahrscheinlich kannst du den ändern.

ich habe eine Nvidia 7600 GT als Grafikkarte im Einsatz. Als Treiber läuft bei mir gemäss Synaptic der nvidida-glx-new ... normalerweise korrekt nicht wahr ? Oder gibt es eine schnellere Alternative ?

Ja, der nvidia-glx-new ist der korrekte Treiber für deine Grafikkarte. Der Witz an den Nvidia-Treibern ist ja gerade, dass der komplette performancerelevante Teil des Codes für alle Betriebssysteme gleich ist, so dass es da eigentlich keine Performanceunterschiede geben sollte.
Gibt doch einmal in der Shell [tt]top[/tt] ein und sage uns, was dort im Leerlauf unter [tt]mem, used[/tt] für dein System steht.
Eventuell kann es sich auch lohnen, die Desktopeffekte einmal testweise fürs Flugsimulieren auszuschalten. Es kann sein, dass diese bei deiner -eher schwachen- Grafikkarte zu viel Leistung aufbrauchen.

Du hast Recht gehabt. Sobald ich die Desktop Effekte ausschalte, läuft das System absolut flüssig ! Vielen Dank für deinen Hinweis ! Bezugnehmend auf die Abfrage [tt]top[/tt] frisst Firefox mit durschnittlich 50 Prozent eine Menge Ressourcen. Hatte ich bei Anwendung von X-Plane selbstverständlich ausgeschaltet. Ist dieser Wert eigentlich normal ? Ubuntu ist auf meiner Platte so ziemlich jungfräulich vorhanden.

Firefox 2 hat ein großes Problem: Je mehr Seiten er lädt, desto größer wird er. Je nach Länge, seit der er läuft, kann er da schon regelrecht obszöne Größen erreichen. Firefox 3, welches mit dem aktuellen Ubuntu 8.04 ausgeliefert wird, soll dieses Problem aber größtenteils beheben.
Leider leider leider habe ich vorhin versucht, Ubuntu neu zu installieren und bin gescheitert... Übergangsweise bin ich daher im Moment mit -man glaubt es kaum- Vista unterwegs. Und wo wir schon von Unterschieden reden: Xubuntu 7.10 erreichte mit diesem Laptop eine Akkulaufzeit von knapp 3 h. Alle anderen Linuxvarianten, die ich ansonsten ausprobiert habe (inklusive Xubuntu 8.04) liefern magere 1,5 h. Vista liefert 4,5 h. GRRRRR!!!!

bei mir ist Ubuntu 8.04 auf der Platte und somit vermutlich auch Firefox 3. Bin momentan in der Arbeit ... werde heute abend trotzdem mal nachschauen. Aber das Vista in der Tat so wirtschaftlich mit den Energieressourcen umgeht wusste ich bis dato nicht ...

Das scheint bei mir ein Problem mit irgendeinem Linux-Treiber zu sein, der latent zu viel Strom frisst.
Inzwischen habe ich es geschafft, Ubuntu zu installieren (Die CD war defekt). So wie es mit der Akkulaufzeit aber aussieht, werde ich noch ein Weilchen mit Vista herumspielen. Je länger ich es benutze, desto mehr Spaß habe ich daran ;)
Das neue Xubuntu finde ich aber auch nicht schlecht -- auf seine eigene Art sogar noch etwas schicker als das manchmal etwas überladen wirkende Ubuntu.
Mal sehen was die nächsten Releases von Suse und Fedora in den nächsten Monaten bringen.

das Derivat Xubuntu ist ja bekanntlich auf ältere Hardware zugeschnitten und somit auch auf moderner Hardware entsprechend ressourcenschonender als Ubuntu und Konsorte. Im Bezug auf Vista scheint das Energiespar Management ausgefeilter auszufallen jedoch benötigt Vista auf der anderen Seite eine ganze Menge mehr Ressourcen nur zur Darstellung des Desktops mit allen seinen Effekten. Dann wird ein Microsoft Produkt mit unvergleichbaren finanziellen Mitteln und entsprechendem Manpower unterstützt. Ich bin vermutlich nicht ganz so tief im Thema drinn aber selbst die Anwendung der berühmten Registry stimmt mich bei allen Windows Versionen nach wie vor fraglich. Das war mitunter auch ein Grund vor 1 Jahr temporär auf einen Macmini umzusteigen, um ein bisschen in die Welt von Unix einzutauchen. Aufgrund mangelnder Performance dieser Keksdose bin ich wieder auf Windows umgestiegen und habe mich seitdem mit Linux beschäftigt. Von der Struktur her zweifelsohne über jeden Zweifel erhaben ... allerdings fundierte Grundkenntnisse vorausgesetzt. Ein reiner Anwender wird vermutlich mit Linux auf Dauer keine Freude haben. Für diese Kollegen kommt komfortablerweise nur Mac OSX in Frage oder aber eben eine Windows Lösung mit den genannten Einschränkungen. Wiederum muss man sich vorab Gedanken über den Einsatz eines solchen Betriebssystems machen. Richtige Zocker sind definitiv bei Linux und Mac OSX falsch aufgehoben. Bleibt in den meisten Fällen nur eine Kombination mehrere Betriebssysteme übrig. Ich für meinen Teil bin nach wie vor auf der Suche nach der perfekten Lösung für meine Ansprüche ... obwohl ich auch sehr gerne mit dem Computer spiele. Alles nicht so einfach aber Du wirst doch wohl nicht untreu werden ? * ;D
Aber mal ganz ehrlich gesagt ... auch ich hatte vor nicht allzulanger Zeit die Faxen dicke mit Konsole und dergleichen aber mittlerweile habe ich den Spass an der Tüftelei wieder gefunden.
Suse scheint mir doch ziemlich überladen zu sein und Fedora kenne ich noch nicht. Diese Message war nicht wirklich eine reine Antwort auf deinen Beitrag. Mehr meine eigene Meinung zum Thema Betriebssysteme.
Wie gesagt ... kein System für jedermann sondern eher für Freaks mit starken Nerven.
Nun habe ich doch glatt einen halben Roman verfasst. War eigentlich gar nicht meine Absicht. ;D

Oh je, nein, ich werde garantiert nicht zu Windows konvertieren! Dazu habe ich mein Linux viel zu lieb. Und OSX möchte ich auch nicht mehr missen -- aber wenn schon Windows, dann wenigstens Vista. Mit diesem UI-Multikulti und diesen Spaghettimenüs von XP komme ich nicht mehr klar.
Eine kleine Geschichte:
Ich muss morgen früh ein Informatik-Tutorium halten. Zu diesem Zweck musste ich noch das entsprechende Programm vorbereiten -- eigentlich keine große Sache. Da aber Vista nun schon einmal lief und ich -Gesetz von Oben- im Tutorium ohnehin Windows verwenden muss, dachte ich mir: Dann programmiere ich eben mit Windows.
Natürlich hatte ich, da ich Windows erst gestern installiert hatte, noch keine Entwicklungsumgebung installiert. Dumme Sache, das. Vor allem, da ich aus leidvoller Erfahrung weiß, dass *die* Windows-Entwicklungsumgebung, MS Visual Studio 2008 Professional Education Directors Cut Limited Edition XT (oder so), mehrere Stunden und ein starkes Duzend Gigabyte für seine Installation braucht. Enter Eclipse und GCC, zusammen ein Download von weniger als 100 Mb. Nach ein wenig Herumgefuddel ließen sich die Beiden aber einfach nicht verheiraten, wahrscheinlich fehlten ein paar Compiler-Bestandteile (MinGW war wohl unvollständig und Cygwin wurde erst gar nicht erkannt).
Was tun? Was ich immer mache, wenn ich mit Windows nicht weiter komme: Linux starten, eine meiner trusty VMs laden und loslegen. Also Externe Festplatte holen, anschließen, meine vorkonfigurierte Vista-Development-VM mit fertig funktionierendem MSVC geladen und los ging es -- nur eben: am Stromkabel und mit konstant laufendem Lüfter, denn Linux verbraucht auf meinem Laptop (aber nur auf meinem!) gut dreimal so viel Strom wie Vista.
Falls du dass noch nicht probiert haben solltest: Es gibt keine stabileren Windows-Installationen als virtualisierte Installationen.
